If you’ve sent me a query recently, you’re in good company. I have a backlog of more than 100 to read (and that’s not counting the full and partial manuscripts awaiting review). That means that while I strive to read everything and get back to authors within two weeks, it’s probably going to take me a bit longer than that.
And although I try to reply to all who query, see above. There are only so many hours in which to do it all, and the most important part of my job is working hard to find homes for the manuscripts of my clients.
Bottom line: if you haven’t heard from me within three weeks, assume I’ve passed. As I’ve said in other places, that isn’t a judgment on your talent. Most writers who query me are talented. But we all must limit the number of manuscripts we take on, in order to give our clients’ projects the attention they deserve. It comes down to personal preferences. I’m sure I’ve turned down some potential blockbusters. All agents and editors have and will continue to do so. It’s the nature of the business. Keep querying other agents. Keep writing. Keep developing your craft.
